A wet room lets shower water fall directly onto the floor, with no step or lip into the shower area, which makes it a particularly practical option for anyone with limited mobility, and one of the reasons we fit so much of it in care homes and assisted living properties.
Because water and contaminants such as shampoo can make a floor slippery fast, wet rooms need flooring that’s been specifically tested for slip resistance, wet and dry. We only install safety vinyl flooring in wet rooms, in ranges from Polyflor, Altro and Forbo built for exactly this environment.

What is Wet Room Flooring?
Wet room vinyl flooring is built for areas that see heavy water exposure every day, not just the odd splash, and it’s designed to be walked on barefoot.* Slip resistance is usually tested two ways: a rating for grip in shoes, and a separate rating for barefoot use. If a wet room will be used regularly without shoes, it’s worth checking that a product carries a genuine barefoot rating rather than just a shod one, since the two don’t always line up.
Wet room flooring is coved up the walls a minimum of 100mm and welded at the corners and joints to create a watertight finish, so water can’t track behind the covering into the subfloor. Altro Aquarius wet room flooring and Polyflor wet room floor ranges such as Quattro are among the products we fit most often, alongside Altro Pisces and Forbo Safestep Aqua, all built to hold their slip resistance even with water, shampoo or conditioner on the surface.
Also tested for use with bathroom products such as shampoo and soap, not just the barefoot element.

A lot of the wet room work we do isn’t in a private home, it’s in a care home, assisted living scheme or supported housing unit, where the flooring has to work for residents, carers and cleaning staff all at once. Slip resistance underfoot matters even more in these settings. Residents are often being supported while showering, sometimes barefoot, and may not be able to steady themselves quickly if the floor feels unfamiliar or unsafe.”
This breaks the single dense sentence into two shorter ones, drops the “matters more, not less” construction (which reads as a bit of a rhetorical stumble), and makes the barefoot/bracing point more concrete rather than compressed.

Wet room Flooring Installation and Consultancy
At Meadee flooring, we want your wet room project to go swimmingly so there’s a few things that need to be done differently from any other bathroom before we can fit the flooring.
Firstly, we need a vinyl tuck down drain to be installed into the floor and your builder should have either put in a wet room tray or have suitable falls. The wall covering, be it ceramic tiles or Whiterock etc should be finished 100mm from the floor and a captile trim fitted whilst you’re installing your wall covering. This is a trim where one side fits into the back of the wall covering and the other side, the vinyl flooring fits into it.
This is a crucial part that makes the joint between the walls and the floor water tight. At this point, we latex over your subfloor to give it a smooth finish for vinyl to sit on and then we can install your wet room flooring.
Please note that we don’t create falls or fit drains, and it’s the responsibility of your builder to make sure there’s an adequate fall so the water runs into the drain. How Long Does Wet Room Flooring Installation Take?
Our wet room floor installers can get your new flooring installed quickly and efficiently. Depending on the size of the wet room and where you are located, we are usually finished in two days, one day to prep and another day to fit the vinyl.
Do You Make the Wet Room Fall for My Wet Room?
No. Your builder/bathroom fitter will need to either install a wet room shower tray (which will have falls already) or screed it with an adequate fall ready for latexing.

What is the Best Flooring for a Wet Room?
The best flooring for wet rooms tends to be vinyl flooring, such as flooring from Altro, Polyflor and Forbo, installed by Meadee Flooring. Historically, vinyl flooring for a wet room had an embossed layer with dimples. Although this is still available, alternative products without the dimples are widely used and are easier to keep clean.
What slip rating do I need for a wet room floor?
It depends on whether the room will be used barefoot, in shoes, or both, and who’s using it. As a rough guide, most domestic and care settings sit in a similar bracket, but the right specification depends on the individual room. We’re happy to advise once we know how the space will be used.
Is wet room flooring different to normal bathroom flooring?
Yes. Standard bathroom vinyl isn’t tested to the same barefoot wet slip standards as wet room flooring.
Do you fit wet room flooring in care homes and assisted living properties?
