What is Non-Slip Flooring
Non-slip flooring is a type of floor covering that helps prevent slips and falls.
Non-Slip flooring options include safety vinyl flooring which is made for areas where oil, water and food debris are common hazards. They offer slip resistance, are water-resistant, and available in a wide range of colour and specification options, including wood and concrete effect. Some are perfect for wet rooms, some are ideal for commercial kitchens and food prep areas, whilst some are well suited for general circulation spaces.
Safety LVT are specific luxury vinyl tiles with slip resistant surface layers for added safety that replicate natural materials such as wood and stone while offering improved traction. They are easy to maintain, available in a wide choice of designs, suitable for dry and light-moisture areas and comfortable underfoot. Used in shops, offices, reception areas, front of house cafés and general commercial areas.

Some premises don’t require the same level of slip protection as a commercial kitchen, but choosing flooring with improved slip resistance is still highly beneficial.
Whilst there is an abundance of manufacturers to choose from, we regularly use Altro, Polyflor and Forbo as they are three of the leading manufacturers of sheet safety vinyl. Altro Stronghold 30 is particularly popular for busy commercial kitchens and Altro Pisces and Polysafe Quattro for wet rooms. Surestep Original, Altro Walkway and Polysafe Wood FX are popular choices for sheet vinyl in general circulation and lower risk areas.
LVT with slip-resistant properties include Polyflor Expona Control or Amtico Safety available in Amtico’s Signature and Spacia ranges.

What is the difference between safety vinyl and slip-resistant LVT?
Safety vinyl is designed specifically for areas where spills, water or contaminants are common, offering higher slip ratings and a textured safety layer. Slip-resistant LVT provides better grip than standard LVT but is intended for dry or lightly-moist environments, not wetrooms or commercial kitchens.
Can non-slip flooring still look stylish?
Absolutely. Modern safety flooring comes in a wide range of finishes, and slip-resistant LVT from Polyflor and Amtico offers high-end designs perfect for retail and customer-facing spaces.
Is non-slip flooring easy to clean?
Mostly yes. Both safety vinyl and slip-resistant LVT are designed for straightforward maintenance and often feature a PUR coating for ease of cleaning. But in order to provide good non-slip properties, the surface is not fully smooth and smooth surfaces are always easier to clean. Some safety sheet vinyls particularly in a commercial kitchen, will need more robust cleaning to dissolve any grease captured on the floor, to ensure good traction is maintained. It is therefore recommended that a good cleaning regime is introduced/extended when updating your floor.
Do I need safety flooring in my retail shop?
While not always mandatory, it should definitely be considered—especially in entrances where customers may bring in water from outside. Matting at the entrance, alongside slip-resistant LVT is often an excellent choice for these areas.
Is safety vinyl suitable for wet rooms?
Yes. Safety vinyl is commonly used in wet rooms because once seams are hot welded, it provides a water-resistant, hygienic and slip-safe surface. But it is necessary to get the correct safety vinyl purposely designed for wet rooms. Popular products include Altro Pisces and Polysafe Quattro, which are suitable for both barefoot and soft soled shoes.
How long does non-slip flooring last?
Most products we use have 10 year manufacturers warranties or longer. With proper installation and maintenance, both safety vinyl and commercial-grade LVT can last for many years.
